First Cukes, Peas Done

Hot Hot Hot!  Our third heat wave. Picked my first 3 cukes. The vines are about half way up the trellis but growing very fast. Also have jalapenos ready to pick. Picked another batch of pesto -- have made four batches so far, and was able to throw in the garlic scapes I still had leftover.  Have baked two batches of beets, sliced, and let sit in raspberry vinaigrette. Picked two big bags of Swiss Chard, delicious boiled with sweet onions. Victory Garden Cookbook from Mom is helpful.  Potatoes are dying back. They never bloomed. Couldn't really keep spraying for flea beetles because it kept raining.

Septoria on the tomatoes is really bad..everyone has it now. We had the third wettest June on record. The peppers growing near the tomatoes also look like they have fungus, but not the ones in the other bed, are they getting it from the tomatoes?  Spent an hour cutting off infected leaves and sprayed a copper spray on them two days ago with predicted dry spell. Also sprayed the butternut squash, which is growing like crazy. Tomatillos are crazy and growing fruit. A fun experiment. Slugs invaded the lettuce and cabbage. Mesclun is nearly done. Carrots from last year are blooming just like the Queen Anne's Lace they really are. Parsnips thriving now.  Bush beans flowering. Pole Beans zooming up the trellis in plot #1. Need to rip out those peas and get the other pole beans in.

Swiss Chard:  Forget trying to plant it too early. It takes forever.  The batch I planted at home and transplanted when still pretty small is growing like crazy. The Swiss Chard just doesn't want to grow until it get warm out.

Stone Gardens farm says now is the best time to transplant broccoli for fall. Carrots look GREAT. Dill is flowering.
