Five days ago there was a hard freeze at Jones Farm but not in the garden. Today it is in the 90s. Heat wave!! Tomatoes and peppers were stressed, but seem to be hanging in there. Peas are blooming, as is cilantro that sprouted last fall. Have harvested several bags of meslun mix and arugula. Started to get a little bitter last time I picked, but not too bad yet.
Garlic just starting to throw off scapes. Hit all beds with fireplace ashes.
This week I transplanted the squash and cucumbers, planted pole beans and more watermelon. Discovered my kale was actually rutabega :/.
Many other gardens just starting their plots.
PESTS: Potatoes look great, but getting lots of flea beetles. Spraying with Neem. Also striped potato beetles on the potatoes and tomatillos. Raddishes were wormy.
Cabbage Maggots killed some brocolli. Found Cabbage moth caterpillars on some brussel sprouts.
***NEXT YEAR*** Think about starting a couple cherry and beefsteak tomatoes early, but delay the rest of the tomatoes maybe 3 weeks compared to how I planted this year. Tomatoes & peppers best late May, although we did just have a very cold spring. Many people buy plants at Glendale Farms
